About Dzaleka Refugee Camp
Located 60 km from Lilongwe City Centre, Dzaleka Refugee Camp is home to refugees fleeing war-torn countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Burundi, with others coming from as far as Eritrea and Somalia. The camp hosts thousands of individuals seeking safety, many of whom face significant challenges, including trauma and limited access to resources.

Our Ministry
Nico and Vicky, members of the Catalyst Team, have a deep passion for serving the refugees at Dzaleka. Together with Ethnos Movement International (EMI), they partner with the Dzaleka Christian Churches Union (DCCU)—the governing body overseeing most Christian churches in the camp. The DCCU plays a vital role as the link between the government, the UN, and the refugee community, providing spiritual care and support to those in need.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Men’s Ministry
This ministry centers on pastoral care and discipleship for church leaders within the camp. With over 160 rural churches, many pastors have had no formal theological training. The men’s ministry provides much-needed guidance and equipping for these leaders, most of whom have experienced trauma or were born in refugee camps.
  • Women’s Ministry
Women in the camp are ministered to through art and discipleship. The “Creating with Christ” initiative combines trauma counseling and creative expression. Women write or draw their pain and struggles on paper, and through prayer and listening to God’s voice, they transform those representations into beautiful art that reflects healing and truth. This process helps women address trauma while discovering their God-given value and purpose.
  • Special Projects and Outreaches
Regular projects and outreaches aim to meet the practical and spiritual needs of the refugees. Outreach teams are invited to join the work God is doing in Dzaleka, participating in various initiatives to bring hope and support to the community.
